How You Can Transition to a Career in HR

How You Can Transition to a Career in HRHow You Can Transition to a Career in HRPeriodically, a readers question has universal appeal and application so I am sharing both the question and my response. This particular question comes to me a lot, particularly from people who want to transition into the field of HR. With little to no formal education in HR and little job experience, what can the individual do to quickly impact their ability to work in the HR field? Readers Question Let me introduce myself. My name is Ann and I am a BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) graduate. I have several years of experience working as an accounts assistant, administration assistant, data entry operator and so on. I am 30 years old now and I wish to make upward progress in my career and menschenfreundlich Resources interests me. But all the HR vacancies (even HR assistants) require HR experience. So, I thought of studying further to increase my chances of getting an HR position. I am planning t o do a Graduate Certificate course in Australia and there are two options Graduate Certificate in Human ResourcesGraduate Certificate in Humanities and Social Science Which one do you think might give me a chance to put a foot in the door in HR? I would be most obliged if you could provide advice in this matter. Thank you for your time and thoughts. Human Resource Response I am unfamiliar with many graduate certificates, so it is difficult to comment on specific ones, but I would think that one that allowed HR coursework and businessstudiesif that is your goal, would be better. However, I have several additional ideas. Preparing to Work in HR Why not interview several successful HR managers in your community to seek out their advice about getting into the field of HR and how you can prepare. Many HR people are willing to do these informational interviews. At these interviews, you can find out what degrees and qualifications they seek in your local area for an HR hire.Rather than reaching across the world for advice, your best bet is to get it from the people who might eventually consider hiring youwhere you live and want to work. For example, in the US, certifications are more important in bigger companies and in the large cities such as Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Houston. In smaller companies, theyre rarely needed. The informational interviews that you participate in are also a way to get your name, as a person who is interested in HR, out into your community. When an employer knows that you are available and interested, the employer may decide not to advertise any open position. Is there any way that you can take on additional tasks in your current job that take you in the HR direction? Many people started in HR by doing payroll as an example. Talk to your boss and your companys HR person about your goal and get advice. Maybe there are ways the departments can share you.In one client company, the controller asked to become more involved in the HR dep artment and the HR VP was delighted to have a responsible platzset of hands to expand HR services. The controller got to know the field and became the confidant of the HR VP and also earned her Masters degree in HR. This was a big win for the company. Work with a decent resume writer or your college career services office to take your accounting experience and make it sound useful in an HR department. Numbers people are always needed in HR, so perhaps this experience can provide a bridge into an HR career. Customizing your resume to emphasize the skills and experience needed in HR is vital. Can you take a brief leave to do an HR internship? Internships give you the hands-on experience that you need to launch your HR career. Consider part-time or four days a week at your current job if your employer is willing to allow flexibility. If you have no grad degree in HR or business, consider that they are becoming more important in HR and might make you more employable. Apply for HR Jobs Without Experience You can apply for the HR positions that require experience. Work with your resume and titelbild letter to make your current skills and tasks relevant to HR, and apply. Here are some thoughts on getting into HR and how you can find out about HR jobs where you want to live and work. The Sneaky Way Your Boss Is Trying to Say Youre on the Promotion Track

The Sneaky Way Your Boss Is Trying to Say Youre on the Promotion TrackThe Sneaky Way Your Boss Is Trying to Say Youre on the Promotion Track Having a professional role that both engages and challenges you is a cornerstone of job fit. Savvy managers are aware of this, and make team members professional development a priority.Glassdoors recent report Why Workers Quit implicates career stagnation as a leading cause of turnover. Morgan Smart, Glassdoor Data Scientist who authored the report, writes It should come as little surprise that employers who offer attractive culture and values and provide clear upward career paths for employees are more likely to retain workers who are looking for the next job in their careers.A stretch assignment is one way your employer can provide that path and keep you engaged in your role. Its a nod that management recognizes your diligence, skill and talent and has confidence in your ability to take it to the next level. Mikaela Kiner, fo under and CEO with uniquelyHR , explains that A stretch assignment might be deliberately created to advance talented employees, or it may be the result of organizational growth, an unexpected vacancy, or a new product or initiative.Whatever prompted you to earn the nod, youll recognize a stretch assignment because it seems a bit lofty. Kiner further explains The assignment should help you do one or more of the following Build new skills, increase your visibility, try out a new discipline or geography, or gain an experience like managing people that you havent had before. While this may seem a bit intimidating, Kiner assures Leadership will only ask you to take on a stretch assignment if they believe that you can do the work and that it will develop your skills. If youve been invited to take on a stretch assignment, and it stands to drive your career in a direction that excites you, consider taking the leap.Kiner asserts A higher volume of work is not a stretch assignment, its just m ore work To actually be a stretch assignment, it should enable you to grow in a new direction. Kiner explains The stretch should be interesting and challenging and include skills you want to learn or an opportunity to do something new. . . Its ok to feel a little intimidated but you should also be excited.Youre probably not totally ready for this, but thats the point. Management believes that you have the ability to stretch into this. Its a vote of confidence in your abilities, an investment in your potential.Kiner advises Dont be a perfectionist and pass up an opportunity just because its something youve never done before. You may worry that your performance rating will go down, and it might. But if you feel like this role is going to help you meet your long term career goals, then its worth it.Compare the possibility of taking too big a chance or not taking a big enough chance, which sounds more daunting?Taking this professional leap reciprocates the trust that your leadership tea m has shown in you. It shows leadership that you trust them too. In order for this to be a good experience, you need to ensure that management understands and supports you . Kiner points out that Taking on a stretch assignment is like being thrown in the deep end, and you dont want to be there without a life preserver.Your management team functions as that life preserver. Its important to discuss that as you work through the logistics of the assignment. There are times in every career when stretching is simply not possible, maybe there are child or elder care responsibilities that limit the number of hours you can work or another factor renders you spread too thin . Theres no shame in this. Its better to be clear about your limitations than to risk taking on more than is manageable.Kiner advises You have to be true to yourself. There may also be room to negotiate the details. . . Recognize and appreciate the opportunity by thanking the person who offered it to you. Acknowledge it a s a vote of confidence and let them know how much that means to you. Be honest about why its not the right choice for you now.Remember, if you have the bandwidth, consider embracing the opportunity. Kiner assures Most learning happens on the job, so behauptung are some of the best chances youll get to broaden your skillset.

5 Meaningful Ways to Thank Employees This Holiday Season

5 Meaningful Ways to Thank Employees This Holiday Season 5 Meaningful Ways to Thank Employees This Holiday Season When it comes to thanking your employees with gifts, branded pens and gift baskets are good, but there are more meaningful ways to show your appreciation. Here are five things you can do this holiday season to break from from the generic employee gift-giving pattern and try something different. 1. Unexpected Perks You probably already offer your employees perks that provide an incentive for their hard work and dedication. The holiday season is a great time to give a little extra. Unexpected perks can cost your business very little, such as an extra day off, shortened work days during the holidays, casual dress days, or even the ability to work from home for a day or two. Or you can invest a little bit to give your employees an office party or a holiday bonus.   2. Handwritten Notes Take your holiday cards to a new level by handwriting a personal note to each of your employees. Specifically mention some of his or her biggest accomplishments during the year and express your gratitude for the hard work that was required to meet those goals. This is a great way to show your appreciation in a way that makes your employees feel valued by you and the company. 3. Business-Funded Family Days Many of us struggle with finding work-life balance in our day-to-day lives. Give your employees a chance to achieve the perfect balance for a day by paying for them to take a local day trip with their family for a little relaxation time. You can fund the entire day (admission fees, meals, travel), or you can give a gift card for part of the day, plus a free day off from work. This is not only meaningful for the employee receiving the gift, but he or she is also likely to come back refreshed and ready to be productive. 4. Practical, Personal Gifts You know a lot about your employees by working side-by-side with them on a daily basis. Let that knowledge guide your gift selection to ensure you are giving something that will be valued and appreciated by each employee. If an employee is into health and fitness, consider giving a fitness tracker or a healthy snack of the month subscription. If she has a candy addiction, a baskets filled with her favorites is a great idea. What about the employee who loves his pets? Giving a gift that is meant for hiis cat or dog can be the perfect pick. 5. Dinner with the Team If you have a relatively small team, you can treat everyone to dinner to show your appreciation and create an opportunity for team bonding. Consider taking everyone out to a favorite local restaurant, then pick up the tab. Or, consider hosting dinner at your house for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. It doesnt matter if you cook the meal yourself or have it catered, the end result is the same: time to unwind and let your employees know how much your appreciate their hard work. Small businesses generally do not have big budgets for gift giving, but that doesnt mean you have to skip showing your appreciation to your employees or simply go with the quick and easy options. These and other meaningful gift ideas will help you thank your employees for their hard work over the year.

Types of Employee Benefits and Perks

Types of Employee Benefits and Perks Types of Employee Benefits and Perks What are employee benefits? What benefits and perks can you expect to receive when youre hired by a company? An employee benefits package includes all the non-wage benefits, like insurance and paid time off, provided by an employer. There are some types of employee benefits that are mandated by law, including minimum wage, overtime, leave under the Family Medical Leave Act, unemployment, and workers compensation and disability. There are other types of employee benefits that companies  are not required to offer, but choose to provide to their employees. There are some benefits and perks you may be able to negotiate as part of your compensation package when youve been offered a new job. Employee Benefits Employee benefits are non-salary compensation that can vary from company to company. Benefits are indirect and non-cash payments within a compensation package.    They are provided by organizations in addition to salary to create a competitive package for the potential employee. Mandated Employee Benefits The following are compensation and benefits that employers are required by federal or state law to provide.   COBRADisabilityFamily and Medical Leave ActMinimum WageOvertimeUnemployment BenefitsWorkers Compensation Types of Employer-Provided Benefits and Perks In addition to benefits required by law, other benefits are provided by companies because they feel socially responsible to their employees and opt to offer them more than is required by law. Depending on the company, these benefits may include health insurance (required to be offered by larger companies), dental insurance, vision care, life insurance, paid vacation leave, personal leave,  sick leave, child care, fitness, a retirement plan, and other optional benefits offered to employees and their families. These types of employee benefits that are offered are at the discretion of the employer or are covered under a labor agreement, so they will vary from company to company. According to the  Bureau of Labor Statistics,  the average number of annual  paid holidays  is 10. The average amount of vacation days are 9.4 after a year of service. Almost half the (medium and large) employers surveyed offered either a defined benefit or a defined contribution pension plan. About 75% offered  health insurance, but almost all required some employee contribution towards the cost. Its not hard to look at the averages and see how your employer or your job offer measures up. In addition, there is an increasing use of bonuses, perks, and incentives by employers to recruit and retain employees. Look at the companies rated the  best places to work  and youll discover many offer health club memberships, flexible schedules, daycare, tuition reimbursement, and even on-site dry cleaning. 1:32 Watch Now: 9 Benefits Employees Really Want Employer-Provided Health Insurance Requirements Under the  Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act  (Obamacare), minimum standards are set for health insurance companies regarding services and coverage. Most employers  with 50 or more employees  are required to offer health care plans, and individuals are required to have coverage.  Health care exchanges have been set up for employees who arent covered by employers or who elect to seek coverage outside their employer plans.   Health Insurance Options Most employers present staff with group medical insurance plans to assist workers with health care costs.  Employers often provide a menu of options for health care plans including Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) and Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs).   Deductibles (how much workers must pay before insurance kicks in) co-pays required for specific services and premiums for plans vary. HMOs tend to have lower premiums than PPOs, but more restrictions in terms of the physicians and providers who can be accessed.   Plans will differ regarding the maximum out-of-pocket expenses that an employee would need to shoulder during a plan year. Health Insurance Coverage Most plans provide coverage for visits to primary care physicians and specialists, hospitalization, and emergency care. Alternative medical care, wellness, prescription, vision, and dental care coverage will vary by the plan and employer. Employers are required to provide health care to employees who work at least 30 hours per week.  Some part-time workers are covered by employer plans, but many are not covered.   Some employers provide an incentive for employees to opt out of their plan.   Recent trends indicate that employers are asking workers to shoulder an increasing percentage of the premium for plans. Dental Care Plan Coverage Companies with dental care benefits offer insurance that helps pay a portion of the cost for dental treatment and care. Depending on the company’s policy for dental care benefits, dental coverage includes a range of treatments and procedures. Most insurance plans cover the basic procedures such as routine teeth cleaning every six months. Dental care plans can vary from company to company, but they typically include three categories:  Preventive, Basic, and Major services, which vary from semi-annual cleanings to oral surgeries. Preventative dental benefits include exams, x-rays, sealants, fluoride treatments, and children’s basic care. Basic services would also include fillings, emergency pain relief, root canals, and dental crowns. Finally, Major services can include bridgework, wisdom teeth removal, dentures, and other complex procedures. Some plans cover all practices, like orthodontic work in addition to basic dental care. The actual benefits of dental care plans are calculated in several ways. Some companies base their coverage on usual, customary, and reasonable (UCR) fees, while others consider the inclusions on account of a fixed fee schedule or table of allowances. Knowing the benefits and exclusions of your Dental Plan can allow you to evade unexpected fees and co-pays. If you have to pay for dental coverage through your employer, heres how to determine whether its worth the expense. More Company-Provided Employee Benefits These types of employee benefits that are offered are at the discretion of the employer or are covered under a labor agreement, so they will vary from company to company. Hazard PayMaternity, Paternity, and Adoption LeavePaid HolidaysPay RaiseSeverance PayVacation LeaveWork Breaks and Meal Breaks ?Fringe Benefits and Perks Other benefits can vary between industries and businesses and are sometimes referred to as “fringe” benefits. These perks, also known as “benefits in kind” can include bonuses, profit sharing, medical, disability, and life insurance, paid vacations, free meals, use of a company car, pensions, stock options, childcare, gratuity, company holidays, personal days,  sick leave, other time off from work, retirement and pension plan contributions, tuition assistance or reimbursement for employees and/or their families, discounts on company products and services, housing, and other benefits and perks that are provided by companies in addition to the employees salary. While these benefits are meaningful and do hold monetary value, the employee’s salary remains the same, and the employee cannot “cash in” or trade the offers for a higher salary.  Fringe benefits are not required by law and vary from employer to employer.   Review Your Employee Benefits Package Whether you are job searching, deciding on a job offer, or happily employed, its important to review what benefit coverage is provided by the company and to decide whether the employee benefits package is one that fully meets your needs. Its also important to take full advantage of what the company provides to employees. Questions to Ask There are employee benefits questions you should ask, to ensure that your overall compensation plan is right for you and for your family. Also, ask specific questions based on your needs and on the criteria that are important to you.

Include statements in your letter that showcase any successful leadership role you have played with student organizations, teams or academic groups. Showcase Any Recognition You Have Received by former employers, coaches or faculty to highlight key assets. For example My supervisor designated me as shift leader due to my ability to orient and motivate fellow staff members. If You Are Searching for a Position Distant From Your Campus or Home Area, Make It Seem Easy for an employer to interview you by mentioning when you might be in their area. For example, I will be visiting your area during my upcoming spring break, might we meet for an interview at that time? Use a Strong Closing to Reaffirm Your High Level of Interest and belief that the position is an excellent match. For positions outside of the campus recruiting program, consider including a  statement that you will contact them to follow up on your letter and explore the possibility of arranging an interview. How to Answer Job Interview Questions About Multitasking

How to Answer Job Interview Questions About Multitasking How to Answer Job Interview Questions About Multitasking In a job interview, a potential employer might ask you how you handle a situation when you are in the middle of working on a singular task, and you are asked to jump on something else at the same time. This probe is geared toward assessing your ability to multitask. How you answer this question really depends on the job you are applying for, as well as the qualities the potential employer is looking for in an ideal new hire. For example, a television producer or registered nurse must be able to multitask, like a juggler in a circus ring. However, if you are applying to be a copywriter or massage therapist, multitasking is not as much of a concern. What the Interviewer Really Wants to Know In most situations, a hiring manager is asking if you can juggle a few things at once. Its a fair question, especially with the sheer number of phone calls, emails, and meetings that can come up on a given day. However, in some lines of work, multitasking is not the ideal. It can mean that your attention is drawn away from your main task, which has a few risks. It may take longer to accomplish a task, and the task may be prone to errors. A person is usually more efficient when allowed to focus on one task at a time. In work, something usually comes up that will derail your concentration on your primary task. Interviewers know that time management can sometimes suffer at the hands of multitasking. How to Answer Job Interview Questions About Multitasking As you’re preparing an answer, consider the job description. Would multitasking help in this role, or would it seem like a sign that you can’t focus on one thing at a time? Once you’ve figured out what the interviewer is looking for, match your qualifications to the job and emphasize those skills that are most valuable to the employer. For example, if you’re applying for a job as graphic designer on a busy design team, come to the interview with anecdotes about how you handle multiple deadlines, tasks, and requests. Then, be sure to mention your hard skills, like software programs that are essential to the job. Examples of the Best Answers I like to multitask, in my personal as well as my professional life. I prefer to have many things going on at once. It keeps me interested and moving forward. Expand Why It Works: Assuming the job for which you’re interviewing involves many different tasks and types of work, this answer shows that you’re a good fit. You come across like someone who’s excited by having a lot of projects, not stressed by dividing their attention. If you want something done, ask a busy person! I find gratification in accomplishing more than less, so I prefer to take on a little more. It’s better than handling only one issue at a time. I’ve learned to batch tasks so that I’m focusing on similar activities at the same time. That way, I don’t lose time and focus when I switch tasks. Expand Why It Works: Task-switching is expensive in terms of time and energy, so if you’re going to claim to be a successful multitasker, it’s a good idea to show that you understand the potential pitfalls and can navigate them. I am best when I am multitasking. When I tackle one problem at a time, I tend to dwell on the solution. Meanwhile, when I have multiple things to accomplish, I am able to focus on the most accurate solution right away. Expand Why It Works: This answer shows that you’re focused on quality, not just quantity. Even in jobs where the ability to multitask is prized, being able to produce good work is important. I prefer to handle one project at a time. It allows me to focus on the task at hand. However, in business, while that would be ideal, the reality is that I need to be able to adjust to outside forces. When a lot of things come at me at once, I create a checklist, which helps me to prioritize and guides me to work on the most pressing needs first. Expand Why It Works: If you’re not great at multitasking â€" and that skill isn’t a requirement for the job â€" being up front is your best bet. This response also shows that you can adapt to your environment and develop coping mechanisms that allow you to excel. Tips for Giving the Best Answer Determine whether multitasking is a job requirement. Carefully read the job advertisement, paying close attention to the requirements section. It should be fairly obvious whether this job requires multitasking or singular focus. Emphasize your skills that fit the job description. Show that you can develop mechanisms to cope with challenges. Let’s say you’re not a natural multitasker, but the ability to juggle multiple projects is a requirement of the job. In this case, talk about what you’ve done to enable yourself to succeed in that type of environment. What Not to Say Don’t stretch the truth. You’re likely to get caught, losing the offer or the job once you’re hired. But even if you manage to fake your way into the position, you’re unlikely to be happy in your new role. Why? Because you’re not a good fit â€" no matter what you’ve convinced the hiring manager. Avoid appearing scattered. Multitasking effectively means being able to switch focus with efficiency. Make sure that your answer demonstrates that you can complete tasks and achieve goals, not just work on multiple things at once. Possible Follow-Up Questions What is your greatest weakness? â€" Best AnswersWhat is your greatest strength? â€" Best AnswersHow would you describe your work style? â€" Best AnswersDo you work well with other people? â€" Best AnswersHow would you describe the pace at which you work? â€" Best Answers Key Takeaways REVIEW THE JOB DESCRIPTION: Look for indications that multitasking (or focusing on one thing) might be valued.  PREPARE TO EXPLAIN YOUR PROCESS: Not a natural multitasker? Explain how you’ve learned to task-switch effectively.BE TRUTHFUL IN YOUR RESPONSE: Don’t claim to have skills you don’t possess. Instead, look for opportunities to emphasize your skills.

Why the risks of early retirement are overrated

Why the risks of early retirement are overrated Why the risks of early retirement are overrated There’s no doubt that quitting your full-time  source of income  in your 30s, and expecting to live not 20, 30, or even 40 more years…try, 60 or 70, without a dedicated income for more than half of your life, is a risk. But for most of us, it’s a calculated risk.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Calculated risks are referred to as “calculated” for a reason. And no, I’m not talking about math. I’m talking about you. You’re the only equation that matters.Early retirement isn’t just financial. It’s organic. The likelihood of living the next 50 or 60 years without a consistent source of income or ever having to worry about money is real, and it’s all in your head. It’s a  mind game. All that organic chemistry that collectively makes up every tiny bit of YOU is the primary driving force behind early retirement, and the risks of quitting the rat race early are n’t  deep-seeded  in math. Not in the stock market. Not real estate. They are seated within you. There’s more than one way to think about the risks of early retirementI don’t know about you, but I’ve heard too many stories that go something like this:“My dad retired at 65. Three weeks after retirement, he went in for a routine checkup and the doctors found a baseball-sized growth on his kidneys. He was dead in three months.“Frankly, I’m sick of those stories. I hate them. Every one.People ignore the proven and statistical risks that come from jobs  â€" especially stressful ones. As  ABC reports: “A growing body of research stands testament to this fact: lack of sleep has been shown to tax the hearts of the stressed executive and the stressed day worker alike.“Layoffs,” the report continues, “can take their psychic and physiologic toll in the executive suite and on the production line; the burden on those left behind, who work more overtime to shoulder a heavier w orkload, can be life-shortening; and living in fear of losing a job, or staying put in a hostile workplace, also boosts the risk of an earlier cardiac death.”I hate the risk of  not retiring early  more than the opposite. To work the vast majority of our life and then retire during the portion of our life where we’re  more likely to get sick  is a dreadful thought. To develop cancer. Suffer from mobility-inhibiting aches and pains. It’s painful to even think about.Consider this graph from  Cancer.gov.  The wide majority who develop cancer are above the age of 50.The highest incidents of cancer occur between 65 and 74 which, coincidently, happens to coincide closely with the age that we can draw social security without penalty: 62. Does anyone else see a problem with this? This flat freaks me the hell out.To me, it’s  way more risky to retire during the period when we’re most likely to develop a health problem  than it is much earlier in life.At what point do we begin to con sider the risks of NOT retiring early and weigh those against the risks of quitting the rat race early?Risk is a two-way street, my friends.I’ve been asked before: “What if you develop a debilitating disease and need expensive healthcare? You’ll never be able to afford it.”My response is simple: “Okay, but what if I don’t?“The risks of early retirementThis post isn’t meant to diminish the risks of early retirement. Risks of early retirement exist. Popular arguments for risks include: Heavy index-fund investors are setting themselves up for failure upon the next market crash The  Trinity 4% “Rule”  is based on old and antiquated data Early retirees don’t have a diversified asset class, which makes single points of failure likely Retiring during a bull market is easy, but it’s not quite as easy once the bull is replaced with a furry little bear Frankly, none of these arguments are necessarily “wrong”. Yes, heavy-index fund investors do stand to lose money when the market tanks. And yes, the next bear market will test many of us who retired in the last couple years. But, let me be clear about the Trinity 4% rule: I hate the term “rule”.Contrary to popular critique, the 4% safe withdrawal rate is not some one-size-fits-all approach that people â€" come hell or high water â€" must  blindly and stubbornly adhere to for the duration of their retirements.Doing so would mean that we humans are purely robots, programmed to aimlessly march forward using the same infantile cognitive powers that we  have always had, unable to think for ourselves, make our own choices and adjust to the times.Instead,  a large majority of us are using the 4% rule  as a guideline.Meaning, we choose a number that we believe to be a reasonably safe withdrawal rate and start into our retirements by withdrawing from our investments  that  amount of mo ney. But, as well-known personal finance and early retiree blogger Mr. Money Mustache  writes  (and one who happens to  believe in the 4% principle), there are no guarantees in life and we should  always adjust our expenditures based on economic conditions. In other words, critics of the 4% rule are missing the point that many early retirees grasp: We aren’t blindly following any “rule”, here. Early retirement isn’t about rules. In fact, it’s precisely the damn opposite.  We don’t follow the rules. We march to the beat of our own drums and do so on our own free will. The risks inherent in the 4%  foundation, along with those of heavy index-fund investing or asset classes are only as serious as the innate willingness of the early retiree to morph and adjust to the changing times. The fact is we humans can endure a LOT…when we need to.Early retirees aren’t robots; we adjust to risk and meet them head onOn paper, it might seem that early retirees are accepting too much risk. But what the paper misses is the motivation and determination of those people and families to do whatever it takes to make it work. What we’re missing here is the very nature of most early retirees. We aren’t your average Joe or Jane. We are typically creative and determined. Most of us retired early because we possess a vision for our future that’s light years better than the default behavior of working into our 60s and  hoping we have some productive years left. Most retirees are Gumby-like humans, capable of moving, twisting and contorting to position themselves to accurately confront economic conditions. If a retiree’s portfolio losses 30% of its value â€" as many did during the housing market crash of 2008,  most adjust their spending habits and lifestyle  â€" like good little human beings capable of making sound adjustments.Picture this: you’re standing in the middle of the road and there’s  a fully-loaded semi-tractor trailer barreling in your direction. The tractor- trailer, in this case, is analogous to a looming recession. Or some kind of catastrophy that we can see coming. At first, you’re enjoying your position in the middle of the road and stay put. After all, it’s entirely possible that the trailer will turn and instead head down a side street before it hits you.It is also possible that the trailer will simply stop, stare you dead in the face but not actually approach your position. Maybe it’ll suffer a flat tire and be forced to the side of the road. Who knows â€" the trailer may not hit you.But eventually, that trailer gets closer to you. 250 yards. 150 yards. 50 yards.Okay, this thing isn’t stopping. What happens at this point? Naturally, we move our asses off the road and let the trailer pass us by, suffering dust inhalation as it passes and maybe a thrown pebble or two.We don’t, on the other hand, stand there like idiots and let this thing plow into us.We adjust like brain-powered human beings, and our financial situation is no different, especially after retirement when the paychecks stop floating in.We take our initial position and enjoy it. We notice an oncoming threat  and we move if it gets close. If we haven’t seen a threat  in 6 months, we might lay down and spread out a bit.Being flexible is our calculated hedge against risk. The risks that can bite us in the assAt the beginning of this post, I said that early retirement is a risk. I still believe it is. But, I believe it’s a calculated risk. For many of us, it’s a risk worth taking because, though one of the endless “what ifs” of life could happen, there’s also a sure thing:If we don’t retire early, we WILL be stuck in an office during the most productive years of our life, retiring only when we’re most likely to develop health problems that can significantly affect our quality of life.Sorry, but it’s not worth it to me. That risk is too great, and based on the numbers, it’s darn near impossible to avoid. There are risks that we cannot possibly avoid, such as: Developing a rapid health problem that requires expensive hospitalization A week-long 50% drop in the stock market A lawsuit that wipes you out of your savings A car accident that leaves you saddled with medical bills forever Frankly, the risks are endless. But, here’s what I believe: Those risks are inherent with every one of us regardless of whether we hold full-time jobs or not.I won’t live my life based on the what ifs. I refuse. If something happens, I deal with it when it happens. But, I’ll always have years of freedom to look back on. All those mornings that I got up without a care in the world and the whole day in front of me to do with as I please. Those memories can’t be taken from me (okay, except for Alzheimers).I’m risking the what ifs in retirement because I can’t stomach the risks of spending the rest of my life doing a job that I don’t enjoy. That’s not what life is about. You only live once. I don’t want to  work  it. I want to live it.This article first appeared on Think Save Retire.    You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Here's the optimal bedroom temperature for sleeping like a baby Here's the optimal bedroom temperature for sleeping like a baby When it comes to sleep, some of us are very high maintenance. At one moment we feel too hot and at the next, we feel too cold, so we keep tossing and turning in bed without getting any quality shut-eye. Even if we do make an effort to get to bed seven to eight hours before we need to get up, we’re not going to wake up rested if we’re constantly fussing around with the thermostat all night.close dialog Advertisementclose dialog/* effects for .bx-campaign-1012257 *//* custom css .bx-campaign-1012257 */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-type-agilityzone .bx-close { z-index: 2;}@-ms-keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { -ms-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -ms-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @-moz-keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { -moz-transform: rotate(0deg); } to { -moz-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @-webkit-keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { -webkit-transf orm: rotate(0deg); } to { -webkit-transform: rotate(360deg); } } @keyframes bx-anim-1012257-spin { from { transform: rotate(0deg); } to { transform: rotate(360deg); } } #bx-close-inside-1012257 { top: 0; right: 0; } /* KD - Remove padding from video wrapper and set height to 100% */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper { padding-top: 0!important; height: 100%;}.bx-custom#bx-campaign-1012257 #bx-creative-1012257 .bx-wrap { height: auto;}/* KD - Change positioning to static as that was not necesaary and here you can adjust the height of the video element */.bx-custom.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-row-video .bx-video-wrapper video { position: static;}/* rendered styles .bx-campaign-1012257 */.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative *:first-child {width: 100%;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-active-step-1 .bx-creative {background-color: transparent;border-style: none;max-w idth: 900px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257.bx-active-step-1 .bx-close {stroke: white;background-color: black;border-style: solid;border-color: white;border-width: 1px;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-group-1012257-AFvXBOB {padding: 10px;display: block;width: auto;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-element-1012257-J0EiS8Y {width: auto;}.bxc.bx-campaign-1012257 .bx-element-1012257-J0EiS8Y *:first-child {padding: 2px 4px;font-size: 10px;color: rgb(255, 255, 255);text-transform: uppercase;background-color: rgb(0, 0, 0);background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.34);}Luckily, experts have identified an optimal temperature range that could help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer. For most people, the ideal temperature for slumber is between  60 and 67 degrees  Fahrenheit.Although some people associate being cozy and warm with better sleep,  keeping your bedroom cool instead of warm can actually facilitate quality slumber. This is because when you’re lying in bed about to snooze, your body temp erature  naturally decreases  to help initiate sleep. Keeping the temperature in your bedroom between 60 and 67 degrees can actually aid your body with this cooling process and help you fall asleep faster as a result.Keeping your bedroom cool at night doesn’t only help you fall asleep, it helps you stay asleep too. Your body temperature is at its lowest right before you fall asleep, but it rises throughout the night as you get closer to waking. Because of this gradual  rise in body temperature, some troubled sleepers experience “night sweats,” frequently waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat. These can be highly annoying and can keep you from getting quality shut-eye. But regulating the temperature in your bedroom to be between 60 and 67 degrees throughout the night can  keep your body temperature from rising  too fast and help you sleep for longer. What’s  more, some experts maintain that keeping your bedroom between 60 and 67 degrees at night  could help st imulate  the production of the sleep-generating hormone melatonin. It’s the hormone that all sleep-deprived people are constantly seeking out. But letting your bedroom temperature drop way below 60 degrees isn’t advised either since you’ll likely wake up shivering and be too uncomfortable to sleep deeply. If you’re looking for a way to keep yourself cool at night without spending a fortune on air conditioning, consider trying out one of these alternative cooling  methods. You could layer your mattress with a cooling gel bed topper, use a fan instead of air conditioning or opt for sleeping in your birthday suit. Drinking a glass of water before bed  can also help  bring your  core body temperature down. When buying sheets, go for thin ones and avoid ones made with flannel or synthetic material that  tend to trap heat. Resolve to Make Happiness a Ritual

Resolve to Make Happiness a Ritual Resolve to Make Happiness a Ritual Resolve to Make Happiness a Ritual Reynolds, author of Why People Fail: The 16 Obstacles to Success and How You Can Overcome Them (Jossey-Bass, 2011) In the last fifteen years there has been a colossal amount of research conducted on what makes humans happy. Suffice to say that there are numerous things you can do to quickly improve your mood. Let’s face it: nobody feels fantastic every day. We all have our dark periods. But by following this elementary yet exceedingly potent ritual, you can tangibly reduce your black moods and enjoy vastly greater periods of feeling happy. The important point to remember about happiness is that it is not just dependent on events that occur in your life. It is your reaction to those events that dictates your mood. If you choose to just shrug your shoulders and brush off adversity, then bad moments won’t hurt you much. If you become a drama queen and take bad stuff personally, regular stress and misery will be your companions. Ultimately it really is up to you. The moment you take responsibility for your moods, you begin to see that you are in control of them. It’s a very important mental game you must learn to play. Make this ritual of mood control part of your life and just watch how your moods improve. HAPPINESS RITUAL Early morning Visualize the day going well (5 minutes) List all the good things in your life Exercise (10 minutes plus) Evening Review all the good moments of the day (1 minute) Think of all the things you’re grateful for (1 minute) Visualize your life going well (5 minutes) Within a week of practicing this simple system, the results will be substantial. Your habits of thinking (your brain’s neural pathways) will begin to change for the better. You’ll get used to expecting and imagining a vibrant, positive future, with the key events in your life going well. Sure enough, that positive expectation will improve your performance and presentation and your results will also improve.   It becomes a virtuous circle:   your thoughts create better results, and then your better results create better thoughts. Now consider the alternative. If you don’t do this daily happiness ritual, your moods are far more likely to go up and down with your changing circumstances. People who don’t have a system for regulating their moods experience more oscillations in their happiness. Without a controlling force, they are virtually certain to sail on rougher mental waters. I can think of no more valuable technique to quickly improve the quality of your daily experience and uplift the level of your thinking. After all, why is it that so many people want to be rich, successful, or famous? It’s because of the way they believe it will make them feel. Well, rather than spend years trying to reach those goals, why not be more direct and simply address your moods themselves? Do the Happiness Ritual each day and you’ll feel great. In fact, you’ll feel better than many people who are rich or famous actually feel day to day. To master your moods is truly to be king of the world.
